Porthminster Beach and St. Ives, Cornwall, England

By: Adam Burton/Minden Pictures

General information

Dogs are forbidden from Easter until October, but at other times it’s a pet-friendly beach. For surfers there’s an exposed point break off Hawkes Point, no beach break, and generally offshore winds from the southwest. On the beach are plenty of opportunities for group beach activities, and Porthminster is also an excellent spot for family beach holidays. It’s a gently shelving and therefore child-friendly beach. Self-catering beach cottages, beach apartments, and beach holiday homes are among the beach holiday accommodation available. Should you tire of the many pleasures that Porthminster Beach holidays have to offer, the bustling resort of St. Ives is just a five-minute walk away.

Major attractions

The Blue Flag-winning Porthminster Beach is recommended by the Good Beach Guide and offers superb panoramic views across St. Ives Bay all the way to the Godrevy Lighthouse. It boasts calm, clear, azure water that’s safe for bathing and recommended by the Marine Conservation Society. Among the world-class facilities on offer for your surprisingly cheap Porthminster Beach holidays are beach huts, deckchair hire, toilets, and an 18-hole mini golf course. There is also disabled access. A major attraction of the beach is the famous Porthminster Café, making it one of the most appealing locations for beach holidays that England can offer. This multi-award-winning seafood restaurant is right on the beach. In fact you can sit on the terrace and enjoy the view across the bay, perfect for couples’ beach holidays. It specialises in Asian and Mediterranean cuisine but also offers great Cornish cream teas, a delicacy that simply makes a U.K. beach holiday in Cornwall. Certainly as regards the catering, this might be the best beach in England.

Activities

Porthminster Beach has a distinctly genteel ambience. It’s certainly not as frenetic as some of the beaches in the area, but there are still plenty of activities to enjoy when you step out of your beach holiday rentals. It’s not terribly expensive here, either, meaning you can enjoy cheap beach holidays in one of the most attractive parts of the U.K. If you feel energetic, you might enjoy the benefits of a cliff walk along the South West Coast Path to Carbis Bay and Lelant. When the tide is out, you can stroll all the way around the cliffs to the picturesque harbour of St. Ives. For a milder form of exercise, there’s the challenge of the 18-hole mini golf course to entertain the family. Should you wish to take a swim, you and your family can be reassured by the presence of RNLI lifeguards in the peak season. Charter a boat and you could get to see the activities of the seals and dolphins that frequent this stretch of coast.
